As everyone is on monthly DD's its very confusing to use actual cost for 1 month.
Everyone?  Tell that to those on pre payment meters.
Ok, Around 4m out of 28.3 million households. Still pointlessly scaring 24m bill payers rather than correctly informing them.

Yes the majority still pays on fixed direct debit, and the customers of BG and EDF will not even realise how expensive it was until the next half yearly bill.

But that is a reason it makes sense to post such a shocking figure to wake people up and make them aware of the problem, even so the number is completely wrong. Don't forget they are still publishing a 54% and 78% increase.

Even Martin was using just one percentage in his Q&A to determine if a fixed tariff is good. No information about how the split between gas and electrciity affects it.

Add to that people coming of their fixes now and believing the 54% is valid for them also.

It's closer to a 200% rise if current predictions for the October cap are correct.

October 2021 cap was £1277, current predictions for this October are heading past £3500....

Sorry but that is not how percentages work. A 300% increase is 4 times the current figure, and we are far away from a £5100 cap.

The media need to stop with the average cost nonsense. £500 a month is meaningless if you not average use.

It's OFGEM that quote the cap for average use, media just report it. Many people posting here are above average so will be over £500 for winter months
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

The average customer with monthly billing is likely to get a bill fo £500. Sure if they're on a budget DD scheme they might not be asked to pay £500 that month, but they'll still get the bill.
Customers on six-monthly billing could easily receive bills in April for more than £2000.

This winter's fuel bills will be around 2.5x last year's bills.  People are asleep and don't understand just how big this is.  For once, the BBC are doing the right thing by hyping up this issue.
Many people who are currently blowing their money on holidays and tat should be keeping money aside and will be blaming everyone else when they run out of money for food in the winter.
Those people will probably come on here ranting that their energy bill is 'shocking' and their energy supplier is a 'nightmare' to deal with ;)

Sadly at the end of the day those people will just go into perpetual energy debt and the rest of us who have paid attention to our energy costs and made conscious compromises to reduce our consumption as far as reasonably practicable will probably end up picking up the bill for those idiots over the next few years through higher unit rates or standing charges to fund those who carry on regardless shouting 'the government should do something'.

However my thoughts are with those who already manage their spending as wisely as possible and yet still can't make ends meet. Those are the people who will really suffer sadly.

looking on the positive side we have £66. a month off this mythical average families January bill so even that is down to £434  ...Sounds a bit better .

As an OAP my £300 extra winter fuel payment will go straight into my Octopus gas account .
The other £200 I get in November will as usual go to buying xmas gifts for 3 kids .
I reckon I will be fine personally .
I don t qualify for the £650 because unlike a lot of people I quite like saving money .
I m reading none stop rants on my local Facebook from people who appear to have not found out about Rishi Sunaks windfall tax earlier this year which in my veiw I found very welcoming and will make a big difference. Many people appear never to take notice of News at all nowadays

I notice the BBC today are reminding of the £66 a month coming off all electric bills because of their scare mongering £500 January bill statement earlier this year . Someone has obviously told them to clarify this .
