It’s probably an inspection chamber for the rainwater drains. We’ve got three in our back garden and another three in a small front lawn (house built 2019).

Wouldn’t let this worry you! It is probably an access cover for the sewer pipe that serves all the properties in your row, running along underneath all the gardens.

No, the problem, if there is one, is more serious than the annoyance of a plastic cover in the sward. Can't have too many manh.....inspection chambers. I have six.

Houses have pipes and drains running in and out of them. If they get blocked it's really useful to have some way to access them and clear the blockage. Many (most?) houses have at least one access point (manhole).
The houses to beware of are those without a manhole. Get a blockage and you're stuffed!

    ^ This!
Our inspection chamber/access point is under the extension that was added in the 80s. While on the one hand I am glad there is some form of access from our property, it does worry me that a blockage would lead to the work being done INSIDE the house. Ugh. A lot of extensions in my neighbourhood were merrily built over the drains back then before rerouting became more fashionable.

We have a large one in the middle of a flower bed in our 1970s bungalow, exposed when we removed a conifer. Really ugly but I’ve surrounded it with tall flowering plants & if/when they die back, I’ll sprinkle a bit of gravel & put an attractive container plant on top.

OP If you don’t like how it looks, it’s easy to disguise🥸

We have 5 manholes on our property (don't care for this PC nonsense...) and it wasn't an issue with the mortgage or survey. :)

They're "person orifices". Get it right.

My main worry is that it might be public mains/drains within the property boundaries
