Cheapest Way By Train/underground To Get To Knightbridge London

I was very fortunate to get tickets to Harrods santa. I have been looking at the "one" railway website but am really unsure as to whether I am getting the cheapest/correct ticket for what we need. There will be 2 adults and 5 children ( 3 under 5-understand they would be free) going from chelmsford to I assume liverpool street. We probably will want to look around a bit but are only going to be able to stay for about 6 hours so a underground ticket included would be useful.

I purchased a family railcard when they were on special offer and also have an oyster card. Although we not far from London its been years since I have been but think its probably the last year where all the kids believe in Santa so while I really want to make it extra special I have a tight budget so thought it best to post on here to get the best value out of the day. Everyone on here is so helpful, thanks in advance to any help given.

Would probably leave Chelmsford at about 8 am but some flexibility on this as I realise this may be the most expensive time of day to travel to London. Cheers.

  • You will be able to take your children on the Underground for free. Any time of the day.....as long as they are under 11 years old and travel with you at ALL times.

As far as I'm aware it is up to 4 children per adult (I'd check this if i was you).

I'm only telling you this in case the overground service (One) make you buy tickets for your children for the underground.

    Enjoy Harrods.

A one day travelcard Chelmsford to all zones bought with the family railcard comes to £54.95 total, but you can't leave until 0927 in the week and there are some evening restrictions as well. A peak travelcard is over £90.

    Forget both of those.

An off peak day return to Liverpool Street is only £21.25, total. One adult then buys an off peak zone 1-2 travelcard at (I think) £5.10 and the other uses the Oyster card.

I'd do the nr 11 bus from Liverpool St to Sloane Square in Chelsea and then walk through to Harrods or get a bus up Sloane St, saves all the hassle of the tube and you get to see sights from the top deck of the bus.

If you do decide to use the bus then get a bus only travelcard at £3.50 - adults only, children free - or use Oyster. The £5.10 travelcard covers buses as well as the tube BTW if you need to use both

Don't whatever you do buy single journey bus/tube tickets - £2/£4 a go.

Many thanks to Adrian-london, dzug and richardw. I had not realised that kids can travel free on bus/tube in london.

Also wondered how do I use a oyster card. Got one free when posted on this great site even though absolutely sure how to use it. Do you credit it before travelling or at station.

Going by bus seems an excellent idea as time is a bit resisted on this, hopefully first, trip so it would be nice to do some sightseeing whilst getting around. Is it much of a walk from sloane square to Harrods and we will have several with us with shorter legs. Thanks again.:T

You can credit Oyster online before travelling or at the first station either at the ticket office or at the machine If you do it online you have to specify the first station you are going to use - it doesn't actually get creditted until you swipe it there.
