Hi, I was turned down by 3mobile for a £20 a month contract this morning. On the grounds of "your credit hasn't passed check". when I questioned it they said it could be for a number of possible reasons. I have a 999 out of 999 credit rating on experian, I'm aged 61, lived in the uk all my life, never been unemployed, had my current job 22 years, lived at my current address 21 years, 5 figure sum available on creditcards. Never missed a credit card or mortgage payment. Do I have a right to know why I was turned down.

No. But the place to start is checking your three credit files.
Ignore the credit ratings they give you - check the data only. If you only have small credit limits, that can be a sign of risk.1 -
No. But I also suggest you buy a phone and get a cheaper contract. I was able to get a nice phone for about £150 from John Lewis and pay £7 a month for the all in texts, calls, etc from ee. And I'm older than you, not lived or worked anywhere as long as you.
My credit rating isn't as good as well but everyone says they are relatively meaningless.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Maybe it's the large available credit that's the issue? Compared to salary??I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Give it a few days if you’re not in a major rush to ensure the hard search appears on your files. (Or is it there already?) there’s a slim chance that the system had a wobbly and it auto declined as it wasn’t able to verify something that they had been entered into their system. As others have said - check your three files carefully to see if anything new has appeared recently - and to ensure the information that is there is accurate. (Not all credit accounts will appear on all three of the reports - some lenders only report to one agency).
if the reports are all absolutely fine - and the hard search doesn’t appear - I’d be tempted to try it again - being absolutely one hundred percent sure that the details being entered were one hundred percent accurate.
If the hard search is there - then I might try another provider instead. I’ve recently cancelled two new three connections because of the poor signal and consistency when they show my area as having great 5g coverage. Personally wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole with all the hoops I’ve jumped through over the last two months- in some respects not getting a three handset could be a blessing in disguise1 -

It’s also possible you just aren’t the customer profile they are after, even though Three seem to be one of the easiest to get a contract with.
Was it with Three directly or through a comparison site? Chris has good advice above though.0 -
