If a joint account is required then very often the banks will require both of you to attend a branch. So consider which branches are local and perhaps which branches have extended opening (e.g. Saturday) to avoid both having time off from work.

Or just choose a bank that doesn't have such an archaic sign up procedure. Halifax wanted us to go into the branch to sign up so we gave up and opened a Santander one online instead.
