Fine issues although I paid

I recently parked at DoubleTree Hilton which uses parking eye. I was there just less than 4 hours.
Upon leaving I put my license number into the machine which charged £5. I then got in my car and left. Kept the receipt.
A couple weeks I received a £100 fine. I appealed sending in the receipt. They said we hadn't paid enough money.
I checked with the venue and they confirmed that £5 is only for up to 3 hours.
How could I have paid more when I just paid what the machine asked for? There was no option to pay extra even if I had memorised the price guide on the entry gate and realised the machines mistake.
Should I take the appeal further. I'd be happy to pay the £2 extra which was the difference for an extra hour but £100 is rediculous.
Kind regards,
Brett

This is not a fine, the machine was faulty if it undercharged you. Get back to the hotel and tell them to cancel the charge levied by their agents. From the Plain Language Commission:

I suspect that you thought it was a pay-on-exit type PDT whereas in actual fact it was a pay on entry and you haven't paid enough - not your fault as the signs should have told you clearly what to do!1

Easy enough to cancel by complaining loud and long (but always politely) to the Hotel. They will. Start with the Manager then escalate it to the UK Head Office of the hotel chain if needed.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
