My sister posted this yesterday and it was deleted. Some people kindly gave suggestions which unfortunately we can no longer see. I would be grateful for any suggestions. We have a call with EDF at 3pm today and watched all of Martin's recent interview on this. Many thanks. PS If this gets deleted again - please PM me as to why. Thanks

How are other existing EDF users getting on with tariffs? Ours ends soon and they us to go from £135 dual fuel to £413 per month. I am disabled and live with a pensioner. After a second phone call, they have said we can go for a varaible rate of £262 per month, but this is not as great as variable. Martin's interviews said to accept things if they are 54% more increase, but not much more than that. Help! Can any one advise? Is anyone out there going with variable as opposed to fixed? I wanted to go with fixed but it seems extortinate

  • you need to know your annual usage and the current tariff rate used as well as the tariff rates being offered to you by EDF. As it looks like your coming of a fix you can ignore the 54% figure - it's going to be a lot more than that I'm afraid.

    Welcome to the forum.

    I answered this already yesterday.

The 54% increase was only an average, and more important only for SVT to SVT. If you were on a good fix a increase of 100% and more is very likely.

Also there will be another increase in October, currently predicted at 65%, so the £413 might be "cheap" in comparison. Current estimates are 43.94p for electricity and 14.17p for gas.

Without information of the usage for the last 12 months, and what unit rates have been offered there is no more detailed info possible.

Welcome to the forum. I don't know what happened to your sister's post but I may have read it.

    So:
    • Current fix: £135 pm
    • Offered new fix: £413 pm
    • Or switch to standard variable (SVT): £262 pm
There are no fixed rates currently on offer that are cheaper than the current SVT. The SVT is expected to rise by 65% in October, which could see your SVT payments increase to £432 pm.
On the other hand, £413 is 57.6% more than £262 so it meets Martin's current advice for people who need a fix:
If you're offered a year's fix at no more than 55% above your current price-capped tariff, or 60% more if you very strongly value budgeting certainty, it's worth considering.
Do you know your typical annual consumption? It seems likely to be much higher than average, is there a good reson for this or can you cut down on your energy use?
Would you consider switching? Green Energy UK have a fixed-rate tariff that is likely to be cheaper than the one EDF are offering, and are accepting customers onto it.

Thank you @TheMilkmansDad. I have discovered that my family are eliglible for the safeguard assist priority services tariff which EDF say is  2.5% cheaper than existing tariffs. This is due to vulnerabitliy and age

Bear in mind that no tariff is fixed price but fixed rate so it's not an all you can eat option. Variable rate just means you pay for what you use each month, fixed rate is only a fixed DD amount, it will change if you use more than they have estimated.

Thank you for the welcome @pochase. Thank you for reposting what you had added previously. My sister was highly distressed trying to understand and deal with it all.

Thanks to your comments, I made sure to ask about unit rates in the tariff offers made and also understand the family's annual consumption.

Annual consumption is 5191 Kw/h for Electricity and 19701 Kw/h for Gas. I have no idea if that usage is high or not, so will need to do some research on that.

As to the unit rates I was offered:

Budget diret debit variable tariff - £262 monthly variable rate.
    Unit rate: Electriicty 27.63 Kw/h
Electricity standing charge - 44.75p per day
                    Gas - 7.28p per Kw/h
Gas standing charge - 27.22 per day

    Fixed offer - £413 monthly - fixed until 31 July 2024
    £300 early exist fee.
    Unit rate: Electricty 41.19 Kw/h
Electricity standing charge - 44.75p per day
                   Gas - 12.94p per Kw/h
Gas standing charge - 27.22 per day

Posting in case it is helpful for others

I will need to research comparisions with other providers

    Thanks again

Both the usage for gas and electricity are over the average by 79% for electricity and 64% for gas.

The fix offered is not bad, the rates are below the expected SVT from October, but you need to take into account that you will be paying the higher rates for 2 months, and that this is a fix for 2 years with a high exit fee.

I will drop the figures into  a spreadsheet later.

It depends on the additional cost for the next two months if the fix males sense.

You might want to have a look also at Green Energy UK and their open market fixed tariff.

When I looked at the Green Energy tariffs and usuage, this seemed within that band of usage. What is the typical usage figure based on? I will still look at ways my family can reduce consumption. Many thanks
