Got email from SSE about closed account

Hello,
I don't know if this is the right forum but I changed an old smets 1 smart pay as you go meter for a new smets 2 pay as you go last June as the old one was not taking the standing charge on a daily basis after they tried to upgrade it to a smets 2.  I got a refund of any credit on my old meter after a botch up in transfering it to my new meter.  Anyway this morning out of the blue after more than 12 months, I get email saying I owe £14.40 .  The email had old account number and said final payment for this amount. I wasn't sure it wasn't a scam as it had a link and phone numbers to pay
I phoned them on a number I have on my phone and they said it was a standing charge.  I paid it over the phone when it was confirmed to be genuine. I don't understand why after all this time they ask for this payment. Lady on phone couldn't tell me why it took so long. Has anyone else had this.
