Tarjeta Dorada. Anyone used it and any problems?

Just heard about the Tarjeta Dorada card for discounted rail fares in Spain. We are now over 60 (boo) so can get a couple of these (hurrah). Are planning to travel by train from malaga to jerez in Oct 22.
From what i can see, you need to purchase these in person from a train station and then the card number can be entered on to trainline.com for the discount?
Does anyone know if the Tarjeta Dorada would not be accepted on the above journey? It would be on a RENFE train service.
