I wouldn't care if you had a chain or were in rented. Can't see that I'd be in that much of a rush to move if I'd only been toying with the idea of selling. And if I ruled you out, by the time I did market, I could end up with a chain and have EA's fees to pay.

I've known it to work twice. Once where the buyers had decided on an area of about 4 streets they wanted to live in, they leafleted around 150 houses - photocopied handwritten letter from them, got 2 or 3 responses and one led to a purchase. The other time was much more targeted, again a handwritten letter but this time just one house, they knew the owner had passed away (a year previous) and suspected the family had not yet decided if they wanted to sell or not. I agree with previous poster that if you get the EA to write the letter it is less likely to be read before being binned.
