Hotel took money from my credit card without asking permission

  • Well I had an email  from the hotel stating that they should have added the extra €119 to our final bill, so they are now going to repay it to my credit card. In the future, if any hotels do give a discount at the end, I will clarify how much. Thanks all

If you are lucky the exchange rate will be in your favor 👀👀👀They really should be reversing the transaction so it goes through at the same exchange rate, not the one on the day it hits your account.

He is been already lucky that they are refunding him the €119 as they obviously done as a CS gesture of goodwill, no because they had to (as I said in my original response, maybe as they recognise that their own check out personnel should have been better in explaining how the last charge would appear later or manually take the extra day not yet completed).

It is over 24 years that I use cards abroad or to spend in different currencies and it is unfortunately the case that the transaction is refunded at the exchange rate at the time, as they can only control the amount in the currency of their system.

It depends on how they process the refund, they can effectively reverse/cancel the original transaction within a certain time frame and by doing so your original transaction is basically reversed and so its neutral to you. Alternatively they can effectively say to send $X to you in which case its a new transaction and so subject to the exchange rates of that day.

Personally I've done rather well out of a few transactions that were refunded the second way with movements in currencies very much in my favour however I have had plenty refunded the proper way too. Normally its in their interests to deal with it via the first transaction as that tends to remove most the fees they had to pay whereas the second methodology doesn't.

I am not sure what POS system you have used but all the one I have (even working on projects implementing them) once the transaction has been processed in the end of the day run and thus “banked”, it is finalised and can only be “reversed” as a refund at whatever exchange rate applies the day of such refund.
  • Point number one: we got the same amount back in GBP on our credit card as we paid out - so that was good.
Point number two: the reason why they refunded us the €119 was because I scanned my final receipt out and sent it to them. They acknowledged that because we had been given it as our final receipt, they were in the wrong. So they gave us our money back. Now this means they will get our custom again because we will stay there again.
