I haven't read all of the article but I think it says you have to be careful to balance vit D with vitamin A and although supplements are good sunlight is best.Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

Mercola's article is very good. I agree with almost everything he writes in Sunlight Special. It's a pity he didn't reference Circulating Vitamin D3 and 25-hydroxyvitamin D in Humans . Figure 2 shows quite clearly how 25(OH)D status naturally levels off over 100nmol/L - 40ng/mL. Achieving a stable natural status (as acquired by those who spend time every day in the sun with few clothes) of around 150nmol/L or 60ng/mL allows the body to keep circulating a reserve of Calcidiol, ready to be turned into Calcitriol (the activated cancer fighting metabolite). Mercola slightly understates the need for HIGHER levels of vitamin D3.
This medical journal article for Canadian doctors summarises current vitamin D3 science (to May 07) reasonably well.
"Researchers have estimated the oral dose of vitamin D3 to attain and maintain 25(OH)D levels above 80 nmol/L is 2200 IU/d. If baseline levels are 20 to 40 nmol/L, 1800 IU/d. If levels are 40 to 60 nmol/L, and 1160 IU/d if levels are between 60 and 80 nmol/L."
Remember, the majority of Canadians live within 200km of the US border. They are nearer the Equator than us. Canada is a continent, not a cloud covered island. They have 30% more sunny, vitamin d3 acquiring, days than we do. Their milk is fortified. Their base vitamin d levels are higher than ours so their supplement recommendations (because they are operating in a richer vitamin d environment) can safely be lower than ours.
The average white UK adult (45yr) has a winter vitamin d status around 40nmol/l. We will stay at or below that level until mid April. For those diagnosed and treated for cancer in winter and spring Low vitamin D satus is associated with a worse cancer prognosis.
The average UK adult never gets much over 70nmol/l. At best the UK adult has only half the natural status and generally is around a quarter.
400iu of Vitamin D3 raises vitamin d status 9nmol/L.
In August our average status is 70nmol/L. The difference between actual and optimal 130 status is 60nnol/l. That requires 6 or 7 x 400iu =2400iu/d -2800iu/d
November to the end of March average status is around 40nmol/l. To raise status from 40 to 130nmol/l requires 90nmol/l extra.
10 x 400iu thus 4000iu/daily.
These figures are for while you are resident in the UK. When you are on holiday nearer the equator, SHORT regular, 10-20minute full body(or as near as possible) sun sessions, when your shadow is shorter than your height, will boost your vitamin d levels without the need for supplements. When you've had your SHORT non burning sun exposure cover up or go in the shade.
Car tyre pressures contribute to fuel economy and accident incidence. Driving with tyres 50% inflated or with only 25% optimal pressure would cause more accidents. We don't accept that but more people will die today from unnecessary cancer deaths because they are vitamin d deficient. We should do something about it.

I am currently studying 2400IU Vitamin D3.
Maths has never been my strong point... I have tried to follow the calculations, but can anyone assist me in my research by pointing me towards links that may give me an idea of the appropriate amount an English adult may consume to bring his or her Vitamin D3 levels to an optimum point.
(Edited so as not to endanger this thread in any way, shape or form)

I have just purchased some Healthy Origin 2400IU Vitamin D3.
Maths has never been my strong point... I have tried to follow the calculations, but I have no idea how many I should be taking and how often
Can someone help me out?
Risk assessment for vitamin D shows that 10,000iu daily is perfectly safe for anyone. But no one reading this needs to take that amount.
As you have not stated the specific reason you want to take these supplements I will guess one of the reasons may be to avoid or reduce winter depression. If that is the case then the paper here will tell you how much vitamin D improves feelings of well being. Randomized comparison of the effects of the vitamin D3 adequate intake versus 100 mcg (4000 IU) per day on biochemical responses and the wellbeing of patients That is less that 2 x 2400iu =4800iu however Vieth (the scientist who did that research) lives in Canada and further SOUTH (nearer the equator) than we in the UK live. That means his patients get MORE vitamin D from sunlight (because they have more UVB day exposure, and Canada doesn't have so many cloudy days (cloud blocks uvb and thus reduces vit d status) and CANADIANS drink VITAMIN D fortified milk) we don't. So although 4000iu/daily is effective in CANADA because we are further north, have much more cloud, and don't have vit d fortified milk we will logically need more vit d supplements to achieve the same result.
Do be aware that is twice as much as any UK doctor would say is safe but they do not have any evidence whatsoever to support that advice.
The average UK adult currently has a vitamin D status around 40/nmol/l
The vitamin D status associated with the lowest incidnece of cancer is 137.5nmol/l says I quote This level of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D would require an average intake of 4000 IU of vitamin D per day, although the authors note that intake of 2000 IU per day combined with sun exposure of approximately 12 minutes per day with 50% of the skin exposed could also help patients achieve a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level of 50 ng/mL.
But that advice comes from researchers who life/work in Omaha latitude 40 in the middle of the USA where they get more days with UVB effective sunshine, more hours of sunshine annually and also drink vitamin D fortified milk. I personally take 5000iu daily
That is approximately two of your 2400iu tablets every day.
If you look at this diagram you will see the plot of what happens when you take 5000iu daily if you look at the second line from the top.

You will notice that these people were living in Omaha where you will remember they get more sunshine. more UVB days and vit d in milk. It follows that NO ONE IN THE UK taking 5000iu daily will achieve the same levels as shown on that graph. I manage to get nearly that level(147nmol/l peak level) by taking 5000iu daily and getting the maximum amount of vitamin D from sunlight by laying stark naked in the sun at midday for at least 30minutes whenever possible but I have to be honest and say that was not possible on many days between April and September. ( I didn't take Vit d on days when I sunbathed, I think next year I will err on the side of caution and take be a little more generous with the supplements.)
The rule of thumb is that each 400iu raises status between 7-12nmol/l and this is averaged at 9nmol/l. So one of your 2400 iu tablets can only raise your status by between 42nmol/l and 72nmol/l each but if you look at the graph the nearer your status gets to optimal the less effect each 100iu of vitamin D has. If 5000iu/daily only raises status to 145nmol/l at Omaha it would be ludicrous to imagine it will achieve a greater rise in the UK. (remember they get more UVB days. more hours sunshine and vit d in milk)
In order to stop Mr_Rush vandalising this thread I will remind readers this is not official medical advice or even unofficial medical advice.
Current medical advice doesn't yet recognise the body uses 3000-5000iu daily.
Remember if you spend more than you earn daily, your savings get lower, the only way to raise the amount of money in your savings account is to spend less than you earn daily.
Although I post links to all the full text articles I can find, I do not have full access to the text of every vitamin d paper that has ever been published but I do assure you that Mr Rush does. He has never been able to find any paper or other medical research evidence that contradicts any of the information I have ever provided in any of the posts I have ever posted on this forum.
Readers should also be aware that none of the statements Mr Rush has made about Vitamin D and blood pressure have been supported with peer reviewed published scientific research nor has his claim that D3 (as a stand alone treatement for vitamin d insufficiency) is routinely prescribed in the UK been shown to be correct.
The information is therefore not to be regarded as medical advice, for official UK medical advice has no medical scientific basis in fact to rely on.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program
