ADSL Modem

Hey,

I'm after recommendations for a decent, stable ADSL modem. It only needs to be basic - not going to be used for anything other than connecting a kids PC to a 2MB line. The connection is Bulldog ADSL, which has been live for 18 months but not used for the past 12. Unfortunately, the original freebie router was lost when the connection stopped being used.

I'm building a basic PC for my step sister who is starting high school next year, and I'd like her to have the use of an internet connection (why not, it's there any not being used - my parents never cancelled it after I left home!).

Not fussed whether it's a USB modem or a router (wireless not needed, will be a hardwired PC).

Any recommendations, as I know some of the 'freebie' USB jobbies were pants!

Cheers in advance

Marc

Ps. Will probably be an eBay buy...

I've tried all sorts, and work in the industry, but have found (along with many others) the SpeedTouch range 5x6 models (e.g. 546 v6) to be very reliable and negotiate a decent solid connection, many top end ISPs recommend these over potentially more powerful models from Netgear, Belkin and other brands.

Always go for a router, connected to the PC via Ethernet, this is much more secure than a USB "modem" type.

Also dump the cheapo ADSL filters and replace them with decent ones from ADSL nation: http://www.adslnation.co.uk/products/xf-1e.php

    Hope that helps :)

If you have problems reaching your max speed or SNR problems then go for a NETGEAR. they can get stable connections at near 0 SNR and you can telnet into them to increase or decrease he SNR to stabalise a connection as well.
