Car Satnav issue

I purchased a Mercedes GLC in 2020, still under warranty, however I keep getting a satnav error, the car has been in to the dealership numerous times, two days each time to reload the satnav system. The error comes and goes normally when we are going on a long journey, it is going back in to the dealership again on the 29thJuly. The last time in June 2022 we were heading to Spain and it failed, so mobile data or purchase a Tomtom. Satnav are now essential items in my view

No confidence in the car now, so I have written to the dealership, Mercedes customer support and the Mercedes CEO, expressing my frustration.

I have heard about a rejection process where I hand the car back, how does this work, will it cost me more money, the car is on an agility lease with 18 months to go

Any advice welcome.

If it's on lease it might be with getting the lease company involved. It's their car, if it's broken they will want it fixed.

Your rights to reject are limited at this stage, two years after you started the lease. They do have to fix it though, so keep at them. Replacing the head unit is probably the solution. Expensive so they will try everything else first.

Rejection after two years is unlikely to be possible.  Even if this was much earlier in the ownership, it is not guaranteed that faulty sat nav would be grounds to reject the whole car.

It should be fixed under warranty.
As suggested above, get the lease company involved to exert more influence.

Also, prepare yourself for this to be something you need to live with until the end of the lease.  Even if the manufacturer agrees to replace the whole unit, they may then cite supply chain issues and chip shortage as reasons they cannot fulfill.

Out of interest, what sort of error?  Does the screen show an error or does it appear to work but you are miles from the indicated position?

I ask because the cheap Bosch satnav (it is called the LCN- low cost navigation for a reason :) ) most manufacturers use is pretty useless when it gets warm (which is why they mount them in full sunlight at the top of the dash, and for good measure right by heater outlets.)  I have two that get "lost" in warm weather.

There is an option to check the position information which tells how many satellites it is tracking- it needs 3 at least to get position, mine usually reports zero when it is lost.

However, being integrated into the car the LCN can "guestimate" its position for many miles once it gets a fix, as it knows distance travelled and compass heading, provided there aren't too many junctions very close together it can be hours before you notice, and it may even get a position fix in that time and you'll never notice.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Use google maps or similar, in car sat nav's are dire.

Does your car have apple airplay or android auto built in? If so just use your phone for a sat nav. The in car ones are hopeless in comparison. I have a 2022 top of the range Qashqai and I still use Waze, and the amount of data it uses is negligible.

I never ever bother with an in car sat nav they are usually so out of date and PITA.

Saying you have lost all confidence in the car is a really pushing it a bit!
  • I decide to give Mercedes one last chance to make the Satnav work, the vehicle went in to the dealership on August 3rd to have the maps updated, the satnav was updated successfully. On Sunday 7th August the error has already come back.

The dealership advised that Mercedes-Me was not set to automatic update, I advised that it was and logged on and took a picture showing it was set to automatic, in addition one of my previous emails included a picture of my mobile on Mercedes-Me showing the latest map, compared to the car's satnav showing an outdated map. That actually proves the Mercedes-Me is set to auto update.

The error -  “The Map data does not match that on your system, Please insert a data storage medium containing the corresponding map data”

The dealership and Mercedes customer support dont seem to know what the cause is.

Can someone explain what the Rejection procedure is, as its been suggested by the dealer I could go down this route via the Finance company or via the dealer.

I need to do something (reject ?) before the warranty runs out in 6 months, otherwise I may end up paying for this issue when the lease runs out.

    Any advice is very welcome

How did the Dealer advise that the rejection process would work in this situation?

I am amazed if rejection would be a viable option for this car after more than two years.
I am equally amazed that rejection of the whole car is possible for just a faulty sat nav.

Did the Dealer really mean "rejection", or did the Dealer mean they could give a buy back value for the car that you would accept and then you buy another car of your choice?

Probably a buy back. They will be able to sell it to some other mug at a profit who doesn't care about the error.

Ask the finance company for a settlement figure. That's what it will cost the dealer to buy. You could also tell the finance company about the fault, but if you want the dealer to buy it maybe don't tell them.
