Car price changing after agreement signed

Hi everyone, hopefully I’m in the right place. I agreed to purchase a new car from Jaguar in December, price and part ex all agreed and signed. This was with an estimated lead time of 9 months so was expecting to get the vehicle on September.

I got in touch with them today to check a few things and get an update and they’ve told me that the model is being updated slightly and the price has gone up by roughly 4 or 5 thousand pounds. Are they allowed to do this when everything is already signed and agreed. On top of this they have failed to tell me about it until I have contacted them about something else. 6 weeks before I’m due to receive the car.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

...as above, all down to what's in the contract. When I was considering a new Toyota with a potential 6 month wait I was assured that as long as I paid a deposit the agreed price would remain firm, but some dealers to specify that the car prices may go up before you get your car.

Welcome to buying a new car, you get screwed by the company and dealer.
Ive read lots of reports about dealers ringing up a day or two before delivery and saying it’s gone up in price.
    Take it or leave it.
They are only to happy for you to say no, then add even more to the price and sell it to some other fool with more money than brains.
In the US vehicles come with a sticker price, say $40,000.
You ask to buy it and the say it’s $50,000, Why cos we have one and no one else does.

As others have said, the first thing is to check what was in the sales documents about price change for the new car and the trade-in car.

Is the price change all the new car going up, or is it in part the new car increase and in part the trade in decrease as now older with more miles?

Finally, what does the £5k price change really mean? £5k on an XE is quite phenomenal.  £5k on a high-spec >£100k F-Type is less extreme.

    Some other considerations:
    • whether you had any discounts when you negotiated the original price and are those discounts being honoured at the same percentage of the updated list price?
    • what are the updates?  Are they desirable things that you might have been tempted to pay for?
    • can you afford to pay the increased price if you choose to?  If not, then your options are to negotiate or walk away.
    • what will you do if you don't take this car?

As already said, check your contract.
There is usually a clause about if the specification changes then the price will too.
It would be cynical to suggest that a very small change has been made to the specification to justify a £5000 increase in price rather than loose money as all the manufacturing costs have now increased due to (insert name of something topical that is outside the Government's control here) ;)

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

The price may not be fixed until the car is ready. If it is delayed beyond September there may be a further increase so they would wait until it is confirmed before telling you.

I wouldn't be paying an extra £5K - but I guess if you were starting afresh what could you find that was better.

Many people are moving to lease and waiting for the market to get sensible - although I fear they may have a long wait.

Thanks everyone for getting back to me. I’ll have to double check through the small print in the contract to give a better answer.

It is an F Pace and I’m not convinced the changes warrant the price increase. But yes options are limited now with rate increases etc.

The trouble with refusing the car is that you have to start the buying process all over again and wait another 9 months, during which time the specification and price will change again!
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
