Travel Baggage Delay Compensation - Return Journey

Hello all, I recently was in France on holiday and returned to the UK a few days ago. Unfortunately on this return portion of the journey, my hold luggage was delayed (72 hrs and still counting..)

I have a read of the legislation surrounding baggage delay compensation (namely the Montreal Convention) as most of my Summer-appropriate clothing and toiletries are stuck in the luggage and so am now in a position of having to buy some more despite being at home.

I've heard that occasionally flight companies have contested baggage delay expenses when it comes to the return journey, claiming that there should be no need for any expenses since the claimant is at home and should have sufficient provisions to get by.

I was therefore wondering whether anyone had had experience with making such claims?

They are liable for essentials that you need to get to get you by as per https://www.caa.co.uk/passengers/before-you-fly/baggage/lost-delayed-or-damaged-baggage/. 

It is logical that if the delay is going to your home that some things that may be essential at your holiday destination are going to be things you already have replacements at home for... say your trip to France was for 2 days you'd be hard pushed to claim you had to go out and buy new sets of underwear because all the underwear you own was in the delayed bag... most of us own much more than 2 pairs of pants/knickers. 

If you wish to make a claim you need to substantiate why the purchases were essential and that you didn't already have the items at home anyway... for some things this becomes easier to believe if your trip was 2 months rather than 2 days and your delayed luggage is 3 large suitcases rather than one small bag.
