Single to double glazing grant

Hi,

My parents are both over 60 (my dad works but is of pension age now) and live in a large house that is completely single glazed with very large windows. Are there any schemes or grants to help fund a change to double glazing (they do not have the money to make the changes themselves)? I'm worried about how they will afford their heating this winter giving the current and predicted price rises.

Many thanks,

Kim

Some councils have home improvement grants/loans available, but qualifying criteria is pretty strict. Wouldn't hurt to give the council a call to see if they can offer any financial help.
I don't know of any (national) government run schemes currently available, but there might be some regional help in Wales & Scotland.. The downside to government schemes is everyone has their snout in the trough, so charge inflated prices for the work.

If your parents can't find any local grants/loans, I would advise concentrating on just a couple of rooms to start with. Say lounge, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and hallway. Get those areas up to spec, plugging any draughts as you go. Other rooms can be done at a later date if/when funds become available - It is the route I have taken here.

    government window scheme
    warm home grant
    window replacement grant .
there have been a few recently but unsure what is available where your parents live . The green home one did insulation 1 st . central heating then double glazing . All offered a bit off but over inflated their prices . shop around and google these different pointers . Also compare against what you think is 50% off to what a local firm can do .

If they cannot afford all then they may be able to afford a couple of rooms which they will spend most time in. The heating can be focused on these rooms then

Also watch out for claims from the likes of Anglian & Everest that they too offer "grants" - It is just another angle on their hard sell sales pitch. Had this tripe from another bunch of clowns that had cold called offering an energy survey. Their price was £14K reduced to £7K with the "grant". Local independent quoted £5K without the bovine excrement.

Double glazing is rarely cost-effective in pure monetary terms unless you already had to replace the windows - the payback time is too long even with current energy prices.
Of course you do also gain increased comfort & quiet which are hard to put a value on.

Assuming that the existing windows don't actually need replacement for structural reasons & if grants are not available lesalonos suggestion of concentrating on just a few, most used rooms is a good one.
  • Are you aware of any grants in Scotland please? My windows are in a poor state.

Speak to Home Energy Scotland. https://homeenergyscotland-advice.est.org.uk/fundingfinder/ My gut says that they are more likely to offer you a loan than a grant.
