DWF threatening letter from Adidas

Anyone know where I stand with an issue I have.
I had an Adidas order returned ages ago, and as far as I was aware; everything was as normal. Pretty standard practice where I live to return online shopping as we don’t have access to many shops at all.
However a couple months ago I received a letter from a company called DWF who appear to be solicitors claiming I owe the whole amount of the refund as they hadn’t received it back. I had revived an email stating that my return had been received be processed, so this was a shocker.
I contacted them to show my evidence of return, and then waited another month, till they contacted again stating that the order was revived by Royal Mail and then went back to my address! This was definitely not the case but they’re claiming the order tracking number says otherwise. So I don’t know what to do? I never got the stuff back, nor did I want to hence the return!
Any idea where I stand here? I thought it would be a them problem between Adidas and Royal Mail but DWF are persisting to say they are going to continue chasing me for this money.
Cheers for any help.

It’s DWF I’ve been in contact with as they’re acting ok behalf of Adidias. And it was a prepaid delivery I think, but it has been a while. And I don’t know how to access the tracking information?0

What proof have they sent you of what they are saying?

They’ve not sent any proof other as emailing saying it had been returned to me. I’ve just found the tracking and checked the tracking number. It’s saying it got returned to sender but isn’t tracked on the return so no idea what the hell has gone on there? Could be a fault with Royal Mail maybe?0

Would your originating address have been included on (the outside of) the package? If not then the only address info (without opening it) would have been the Adidas returns address, so that's the only address it could have been sent to.Jenni x0

That’s a very good point actually! There’s no way I would have put my address on the package as I would assume the whole thing would have been a seamless process. I just feel like I’m being almost hoodwinked into paying for someone else’s error and I can’t afford it. But I also can’t afford a CCJ or any extra fines for this
