Yes, it's the difference between your roof leaking because you haven't checked it, haven't noticed a tile or two has slipped and water is now coming in, vs your roof looked perfectly sound till the hurricane that ravaged half of southern England took most of it off.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

This is what I mean by insurance companies being scum and how they try their hardest to get out of paying for a claim...

It just so happens that my patio door lock has failed, so thought I would claim on the home insurnace.  The policy covers keys and locks and suprise suprise they are trying to get out of paying out for a claim.

They want a report first to see why the lock has failed, as they wont cover a lock that has failed due to a faulty mechanism or wear and tear.

Insurance is not worth the paper its written on most of the time

I wouldn't bother the insurance company, these things will wear eventually lock insurance usually relates to criminal breakage. Euro locks and handles can be replaced for less than £50, even anti snap ones less than £70, we've replaced 2 lots this weekend. Both were very worn inside, they simply don't live as long as people, ours were 20-30 years old we think.

It never occurred to me to claim off my insurance when my back door lock failed.

You would claim off your car insurance for a  worn tyre or a oil filter.

These are maintenance issues not insurance claims.
