£400 energy grant [Merged]

In May, former Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that all households with an electricity supply would receive a £400 grant, this will be paid in lump sums from October automatically – there's no need to apply.

I would like to point out that the £400 grant stated above by government that is due to be paid to 'everyone'? that pays their electric will NOT! get paid to me.

We have a meter in our flat and pay for the electric we use, the flat is in a assisted living facility and we pay for our metered electricity to our social housing association landlord, who in turn pays the supplier, as we are NOT named on the account we will NOT get the grant.

So the statement "paid to everyone" does not ring true.

I would be most grateful for you to offer any advice over this alarming fact.

Regards.

What advice are you looking for? You seem to have correctly figured out that only people who actually have a domestic energy bill in their own name will get the rebate.

Isn't this basically the same issue as your previous thread?

I suggest you speak to your landlord to ask for an assurance that the rebate they receive will be used to towards the electricity that you use.  If your landlord has a single account that covers multiple flats then presumably they'll get a single rebate which would have to be shared between all the flats, and there are likely common areas (e.g. lobbies, lifts, stairwells, etc) that also use electricity, so the full rebate would not go towards your electricity usage.   However, as you live in a flat in an assisted living facility it is likely that your electricity usage is somewhat lower than the national household average.

I think the word you're looking for is "disappointing" not "alarming".

I'm not sure they'd even get a rebate at all, as I guess it is aimed only at those on normal domestic tariffs. But I haven't looked at the details.

My advice?  Write to your MP and carefully consider which party you vote for at the next election.  If you're a Conservative party member, don't vote for Sunak if he gets into the final two and hope that one of the other two jokers changes the policy in time.

What would you change the policy to? Surely the fair solution is that the rebate is for domestic customers not businesses and therefore should be paid to those with an account with the suppliers.

I wouldn't change it myself, I think it's reasonable, but OP presumably wants it to change.

Changing it to accommodate people with unusual circumstances like the OP would massively increase the complexity of the scheme and make it much more expensive to run.  Probably prohibitively expensive.

The only advice to be is offered is that the alarming fact is correct, as the electricity supply is not in your name.

You could ask your landlord if they're feeling generous, but it's a longish shot.

correct - but he didn't use the words that you quote - he did also say that "Eligible households will receive a £400 discount on their energy bills in October. "

As you do not have a contract with an energy supply company you will not get the grant - SHAL will also not get the grant so will not be able to pass anything on.

There is a petition somewhere to get the government to change this, because as you point out it's unfair.
