Debit card purchase protection

Hi

bit of a long story but looking for some advice. if in wrong place my apologies

my dd got their phone stolen from work and as you'd expect she didn't bother with phone insurance.
upon reading online i noticed that visa had a 180 day purchase protection for things that were damaged or stolen, hooray i thought till i remembered my bank has just moved over to mastercard.
Does mastercard offer something similar? as I've looked on website and it doesn't seem to mention anything about purchase protection other than if a item isn't delivered or is faulty.

thanks for any advice

I think the cover is only for Credit Card purchases not Debit.

Visa doesn't offer such protections in the UK market in the same way as they dont issue cards directly. Some individual card issuers (eg Barclaycard) have over time but the frequency of those have reduced.

Do you or "dd" have Home insurance (not clear if she lives at home)? If so then in most cases that takes priority over the additional protections offered by the likes of AmEx even if its not cost effective to make a claim.

Don't think any cards offer that now. It was only ever a few CC's anyway.

In fact in all my time working with Visa cards we have never offered it.

Best bet is to see if Home Ins covers it or if employer will help if they have not provided a safe & secure location to store items.

  • Home insurance may not cover phones, I know with ours, bus ran over my bike bag that fell off and they covered tablet but didn't cover the phone

They're a high fraud risk item with a spike in claims every time a new iPhone or Galaxy phone is released... its an easy overage to cut on policies aimed at the price sensitive to shave a few more pennies off the premium.

AmEx still have it on a few of their cards

And that's one of the key differences with Visa in the UK -v- other markets, here the issuers set the benefits whereas in places like the US getting a Visa Infinity or Signature card comes with a load of benefits from Visa themselves independent from the issuer https://usa.visa.com/pay-with-visa/cards/visa-credit-cards/visa-infinite-credit-cards.html
  • Thanks for the replys everyone.
    Insurance won't cover theft sadly.
