The fields are brown, and there's a wee, fenced-off, tree in each one.

Why?! (Ok, I think I know, but still - folk on here usually have another angle on stuff   )

Possibly the locations of historic trees that were cut down?  Removing the stump isn't cheap/easy, so it can make sense to plant a new tree in the same location, even though having a tree in the middle of a field isn't particularly convenient.  I'd expect the fence to be there only to make the position more obvious for agricultural operations, although there may be anti-deer/rabbit mesh attached to it too.

Some farmers actively seek to improve the natural environment, and there's also money to be made from planting trees, e.g. via the Countryside Stewardship scheme.

The other thing which comes to mind is if there were historic trees in these locations they may have originally been boundary markers, so the land owner may have wanted to keep trees in these locations for historic interest reasons.

Landing beacons for alien craft perhaps?
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

Are you sure they are trees ? Little fenced off areas like that often mark bore holes for future road or development site investigations.

Fair do's - that's another angle all right.

Ah, but how would the aliens light them?

Or utility plant such as water main air vents, or sewer manholes.

But I think I can see the trees in each one, and I don't think it is heat-induced hallucination.

We have the odd field similar on the moors.
Munitions and tanks that came to grief on practise mamouvers in our case.
We have a memorial cairn in one as a farmers whim.
Boundary markers seems a good point but two slap bang in the middle is a little strange.
    Mine shaft?

Please ask the farmer and let us know. It's not fair to show this and leave us in suspense.

Thanks everyone. This forum never fails
    To entertain.
I'll take a closer shot when I next pass by.
I'm pretty certain that there are trees there, although still small (large ones wouldn't need the fence protection).
I was told that a tree in the middle of a field was to provide shelter and sun-screening for either livestock, or the actual farmer; that's where they'd sit down with their ploughman's...
This one remains a mystery, tho', as it's close to civilisation, and the trees are too bludy small! So, I wonder if it's a tradition? Superstition? A field should have a tree? That's the way it's always been?

    One in each field?
The strange thing is, its location is bound to make working the field more awkward. But for some reason it must be considered worth it.
