I tend to keep things because I am an hoarder, not because of need. I have bank statements and wage slips going back decades.
Much less so now, as banking and wages online, I don't keep those, just the ones that I printed out when I bought my house five years ago.

I am still happy to revive paper statements,

What if my laptop broke internet banking went down Hard drive broke no internet, that would be no good.
What if you had a fire or burglary?
It is easy to highlight potential negatives on one method but you also need to consider the potential negatives of your method.

(hard drive breaking is irrelevant with cloud based storage).

I agree with your comments paper copies can be stolen in burglaries or destroyed in a fire,

but as I say would rather keep all my paper statements maybe after 5-6 years I will shred them, but until then they will be stored away safely

Poor trees, being turned into paper.
  • I used to keep paper statements going back 3 years but its all PDF now, stored on a NAS which runs a pair of HDD's in case one fails (has happened in the past) and the NAS itself is backed up to a portable drive and important stuff to cloud.
  • I don't keep any of that stuff. We are in 2022 not 1922.

    Simple, uncluttered is the way👍

The only documents I have in physical form: passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, degree certificates, postgraduate qualification certificates, grade 3 piano.

In the past I used to but now only my credit card other accounts are all online.

Reduce paper and don’t have to keep shredding tons of old statements as a lot of places only accept as proof within 3 months of issue.

Only Grade 3? Not worth keeping anything less than Grade 8 IMHO....  ;)
