Please remember to put out a shallow dish of water for the hedgehogs and other creatures during this dry spell. Thank you.

I put dishes of water out at front and back of house and for ages thought I was wasting my time . We can't put food out because our dog would scoff the lot! But I know next door feed hedgehogs.

Then one night my husband spotted a hedgehog having a drink and it all seemed worthwhile , we have seen a few passing through now. Hopefully they will remove slugs as a thank you .

Many people don't realise that hedgehogs are present in their garden because they are nocturnal.

It's very worthwhile to do this as the hedgehog population has diminished rapidly. They will eat the slugs. In the winter they hibernate under leaves etc.

  • We have a lot of cats near us and whilst I'm not concerened about this with hedgehogs (because I asked on another thread on here and was told cats don't bother hedgehogs), I do worry for the birds.

The cats don't have bells or anything and I am always terrified of putting anything out for the birds, only for them to be taken by the cats!  It's a commnal garden, so we can't do any cat-proofing but do you think it would still be worth putting water out anyway?  If so, where would be best to put it for the birds?  Higher up or lower down?  Obvioulsy for the hogs it would have to be on the ground

Higher for the birds and lower for the hogs. Just a shallow dish for the hogs.
