seeking reassurance re warning message

When using the internet the other day my keyboard reacted to a slight touch and took me to a page which then claimed to be Windows Defender and an automated voice said my computer was locked and not to turn off machine but to call 08081752972. I didn't call and did turn off the computer.
I removed its connection to the internet and it seems to be working OK - in fact Windows Defender subsequently did a check which found no threats.
Checking a "who called me" website suggests all should be well.
I'm just seeking reassurance here too before re-connecting to my home network. Can you set my mind at rest, please?

Run a malwarebytes free and adware cleaner here https://www.malwarebytes.com/premium and here https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner . Just run the free version of malwarebytes no need to pay for the premium.

Thanks.
I thought that Windows Defender would have caught things.
Accessing malwarebytes means I have to connect to the internet first.
Perhaps I'm just too cautious.0 -

Perhaps I'm just too cautious.Catch 22 sorry - just do it but in the process, accept that every message is a hoax!Which browser are you using? Perhaps if you have another browser installed you ought to use that in the short term.1 -
Yes - I was using Edge. Do have others installed and had already decided to avoid Edge in any case as it was the sensitive response to what was my home page there that led to the problem.J_B said:General_Grant said:

Fortunately the automated voice in the message was one I associate with telephone scams (like "this is your bank's security department and . . .") and I didn't expect MS to want a phone call.0 -

This is a very common tech support scam. You'd call, they'd tell you your computer is blocked and you need to install team viewer or ultra viewer etc, and then they'd make you login to your bank to check your security...General_Grant said:When using the internet the other day my keyboard reacted to a slight touch and took me to a page which then claimed to be Windows Defender and an automated voice said my computer was locked and not to turn off machine but to call 08081752972. Just ignore it, make sure windows is up to date, and the real windows defender is active.

Windows Defender- like all virus scanners - is not perfect and so just because it did not detect a virus on your machine does not mean that no virus is present.General_Grant said:in fact Windows Defender subsequently did a check which found no threats.0 -
You overlook the fact that the OP did not simply navigate to a dodge website; instead, the OP's:razord said:This is a very common tech support scam. Anyway, I've now used the resident Windows Defender anti-virus and completed full scans. All appears well. I decided against installing other anti-virus software as in the past that clashed with Windows Defender and led to problems.

The two links I posted for malwarebytes and adwarecleaner are stand alone, and can be run on demand.General_Grant said:
