On a low budget Dacia might be worth looking at. They are a bit basic, but have a reasonable reputation, in spite of being Renault based. They are supposed to be reasonable on motorways. It's not hard to find an older 60,000 mile Sandero for £6000 or less.

The best feature my current car has is being able to utilise Google maps for live traffic.ontheroad1970 said:hmmmm on a 200+ mile round trip, I like a few creature comforts or toys - you don't really get them on a Dacia.
it saves me hours of sitting bumper to bumper a year I think.
But I can’t make it an essential on my budget. I suppose I could always get a high quality phone cradle and use Google maps on my phone.1
