International Debt Recovery

I have a friend who was in the Middle East and came home in 2017. She thought she’d paid all debts before coming home but in 2018 she started to have a foreign firm ringing her at home and at work saying she owed money. She tried to sort something out with them via email but they were having none of it so she started ignoring and blocking them.
About a year ago she started getting letters from international debt recovery, all fairly innocuous but she ignored them as she has no spare cash to pay them anything. Today she got a letter saying as she’d not engaged with them they were going to recommend to their client that they refer her account to solicitors for legal action.
They suggest that they will go for a CCJ and that may result in further legal action to enforce the judgment debt which could result in Attachment of earnings, charging order, warrant of execution or bankruptcy. They’ve also provided a list of debt charities.
If you’ve got this far thank you but my question is…
Will the debt be statute barred or has she mucked that up by talking to the ME debt collectors?
Many thanks.

You have two threads running with the same question, were you aware of that ?
Well the statute of limitations is 6 years, and a debt has to be acknowledged in writing, verbal does not count, so that clock is still ticking.
Where is this International Debt Recovery company based ?
And how much are they chasing her for ?
What type of debt is it ?
If its based in the UK, some kind of response will be necessary, if its based abroad, then you can ignore it, as consumer debts are rarely chased from country to country, even though the mechanism to do so may exist, it`s not normally used for everyday debt, its just too complicated a process, with a lot of cost involved, and no guarantee of ever getting any money back.

If its the Middle East, which country is it from?Whilst they might not be able to pursue it here successfully in court, the law on debts in other countries is different and she may face issues if she sets foot in that country again (even if en-route to somewhere else).May you find your sister soon Helli.
