EDF - Total Longterm? Fix or not to fix?

Hello all, first time poster. My husband had the head for this kind of thing but sadly passed 3 years ago and as prices rocket I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I simply can't get my head around what would be the best option. So I'm finally asking for advice, hopefully better late than never! 2 bed maisonette, myself and my adult daughter. We do use a LOT more electricity over the winter as we have a snake and that room is heated with an oil filled radiator (we have no central heating).

EDF electricity, currently standard variable, estimated at £87 per month. (Current unit rate 31.21p per kWh, standing charge 37.25p)
If we move to Total Long Term fixed until July 2024 monthly estimate is £117 (44.29p per kWh, standing charge 32.15p)

What would you do?

Assuming the threatened 65% increase comes to pass then you'll certainly be paying less on that fix from October won't you - what are the exit fees in the event that prices do fall back more sharply than expected from the middle of 2023 though?  What is your heating other than the oil filled rad? Might you be better off with a switch to Economy 7?

  • £150 exit charge. Only other heating is a gas fire in the living room but rarely used - neither of us feel the cold too much, one small blessing!

Have a look at Green Energy Sparkle tariff. Lower unit rate/higher sc, shorter term (September 2023) & no exit penalty but check figures yourself for your own consumption.
(& it's not EDF who I find very poor for billing etc. but your experience may vary)

Is the room with the gas fire the same room you are heating with the radiator? The price for 1KWh of "heat"  is only a third from October if you use the gas fire. At the moment even only a quarter.

That's too close to the predicted cap to take now and come out even for my liking.

As said above get a quote with green energy, here's their website to make it easier
