Argos a cautionary tale.

A cautionary Christmas Tale.

Popped into my local branch of Argos the other day to buy a new lcd TV that I've been saving up for most of the year, plenty in stock so I thought it would be a doddle, then I asked for some help getting it to the car (missus & wheelchair with me, car in car park) & the girl's smile froze on her face, "oh we can't do that, but we can give you directions to get to the back of the shop so you can pick it up there" now considering the back of the shop is right smack in the middle of a pedestrianised zone with no access to cars it would mean I'd have even further to go with the TV than lugging it down to the car park.

"Never mind" says I, "I'll go home & order it online & get it delivered", so back home & on the website, "not in stock", "b*gger" says I, "I'll phone them instead", hurrah!!!! they have some in stock but in all the messing about I forgot to put the money into the right account to pay for it, "no worries" says the helpful girl on the phone, "I'll suspend the order till tomorrow & you can call back with the number & still get it delivered in time for xmas", "ok it's a del" says I & end the call politely.

Next day I put the money in the right account (this involved a 20 min drive back to town & a 20 min walk to Abbey, then the same back again), arrive back home & dial that magic number & quote the order number, "that order has been cancelled & the TV has been sold, we now have none in stock", I used a few adult words to describe their service over the last few days to the idiot on the other end of the line & put the phone down.

I've now found the same TV in another shop for less & had help with it to the car.

The moral of this tale: If you find something you like in Argos look somewhere else before you buy it just in case the price & service are better.

I won't be buying in Argos again for a while.

If you find something anywhere, always look around!
oh we can't do that, but we can give you directions to get to the back of the shop so you can pick it up there

I completely understand that, if the car isnt parked right outside their shop, its not their job to carry the items to your car for you, besides it would probably breach some health & safety law!
I forgot to put the money into the right account to pay for it

    Woops silly you!

    that argos fault too?;)

They wouldn't tell you to pick it up at the back door if it was unaccessable.

  • They help you at our local argos too
  • I think the cautionary tale should be don't buy any goods that are superceeded frequently from Argos ie TV's, computers etc as they don't change their prices as frequently as other stores or online retailers.
  • i have to agree with the staff about helping putting it in your car, if they got injured they may not be covered by the companor alternatively if they dropped and it got damaged, who's fault would it be?

I beg to differ there... our prices change constantly. I should know because I'm the poor soul who does the damn price tickets every Tuesday night!

Fair enough, I'm wrong on that - but you're still far from being cheap or even competative (generally) on the price front for TV's and the likes.

So far the only better company I deal with is play.com ...Sometimes they give you stuff for nothing ....But don't tell any of the folks who ordered the samsung monitor and returned it :)
