I bought a £30 set of the carpet stair tread mats off Amazon as I'm in a rental with wooden stairs and have an elderly cat. They are absolutely brilliant.

Slipping and falling down a whole flight of stairs can cause some pretty nasty injuries.
Cracked skull, bleed on the brain and two cracked vertabrae in my case.
Ouch !!! :-(   Did you survive?

9 weeks on it seems I did, unlike Ivanka Trump it would appear.

We just moved into a house that has painted steps and then the vertical bit of each stair has been tiled with some jazzy coloured tiles. Looks quite nice, actually, but feels a bit more mainland Europe than UK for sure!

I don't know WHEN they last painted the stairs, but it certainly needs another lick now so that's something worth bearing in mind - I suspect paint on stairs degrades quicker than carpet does.

Haven't found it slippy, but I don't tend to walk around in just socks anyway.

I simply removed our stair carpet, washed the stairs and gave them a coat of non-slip varnish. To be frank, though, they could do with some heavy sanding. That's a very intricate job on a staircase, and I just don't have the patience.

They are quite noisy, but not slippery.

A lot of stairs used to be painted, rather than varnished, and that would require less prep.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Laminate is a choice but noisy, vinyl planks another choice, anti slip vinyl tiles etc etc
