SMETS2 Smart Meters - Different Suppliers for Gas and Electricity
I'm currently with E.On for both electricity and gas supply. I'm looking to move to Octopus for electricity and then move to their smart tariffs, Go or Agile. As I am on the E.On Next Online V16 with fixed gas for the next 11+ months, I was hoping to stay with E.On on this tariff which they've confirmed I can do if moving electricity.
My question is, if I have 2 separate suppliers, will both companies be able to get readings from the respective meters okay? Will it cause any issues?

With smart meters the gas meter talks to the electricity meter, only the electricity meter talks direct to the supplier.
Previous discussions here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6317765/different-electricity-and-gas-suppliers-can-i-still-have-smart-meters suggest it is possible to fit a separate comms module to the gas meter to allow it to talk direct. Whether your supplier would be willing or able to do that is another matter.1 -
The two suppliers will be able to pull data via the DCC Network. The basic principle behind smart metering is one meter: one supplier. Each supplier will send out a bespoke security certificate to the meter that it is responsible for: it can then send out instructions; update firmware and pull data. It follows that Octopus will be able to pull your electricity data and E.oN Next your gas data.Toki said:I'm currently with E.On for both electricity and gas supply. I was with both Octopus and Zog before the latter went bust. Each supplier was providing me with bills based on smart meter readings. This is possible because there is a common communications hub that sits atop the electricity meter. Gas readings do not go through the electricity meter.
