Maplin claim faulty item works ok

At the start of November, I bought a tft monitor from Maplin. After a week or so, I noticed that it was emitting a high-pitched whine, and that the frequency of the whine changed when the image on the screen changed. I contacted the manufacturer, who confirmed that it should not do this and offered to collect it for free so they could repair it. However, they suggested I should contact Maplin first as they may be able to offer other remedies such as replacement/refund.
I did as they suggested, and after a week Maplin eventually replied to my email and said they would arrange to have it collected and so they could test it before deciding what to do. The courier failed to turn up at all the first time, but did eventually arrive on the second attempt.
That was 2 weeks ago. Today I received a reply to my enquiry as what they were doing with my monitor telling me they could find no fault with it and that it was 'probably fan noise', so they were returning it to me unfixed. I can't believe they couldn't hear the whining noise, unless they didn't bother testing it properly.
What should I do now? I can still ask the manufacturer to repair it (although I am now concerned that they may also claim there is no fault), but I am not happy about how Maplin have dealt with the issue in any way, and would like to take the matter further as I believe they are shirking their responsibilities as a retailer. The result is I have been sold a faulty item, and they have basically told me to like it or lump it. Do I have any right to reverse the credit card transaction?
I would appreciate if anyone could me any regarding my rights as a consumer and available courses of action. Thanks!

No not at all
Why dont you take it back in store and let someone there actually look at it whilst your there with them?0 -
Thanks for the reply - didn't think I could reverse the transaction, but it was worth asking, as at the moment I am feeling ripped off.
I bought the item online, that is why it had to go back to Barnsley to be tested. I have considered taking it back to a store, but apparently they will only forward it on to Barnsley for me, and I suspect even if I get a sales assistant to agree it is faulty, head office will disagree anyway. Worth a try tho I suppose.0 -
yeah i was about to same thing as the poster above about tft not having fans in them
what a load of !!!!!!!! u have been told
give them (maplins) a final chance to replace the item - if not go back to the manufactuer and tell them that you want a replacment within 7 days or you will sue both the manufactuer and maplins as co defendants
state you will also make an application to the court for your legal costs and interest.0 -
I just thought I'd update you all on the current situation...
The monitor was delivered back to me just before Xmas - I plugged it all back in and to my surprise found that it no longer whines (well not so noticeably) - perhaps something is loose inside and the vibrations from shipping have put it back in the right place?
Unfortunately the room it is in is full of junk now and I am not able to really use it very much, so I am not 100% confident that it is completely fixed, however if I find it has started whining again then obviously I will be contacting Maplin again.0
