Currency exchange

I've got a fair amount of US dollars in cash (about $3000) which I need to change into £ and I was wondering what is the easiest and cheapest way to go about doing this.
Any advice about the best way forward will be gratefully received.

MSE:ETA: and usually 'easiest' and 'cheapest' are contradictory requirements.

I’d be tempted to ask friends/family/work colleagues if they had plans to go to the States (or any other country that use USD) in the near future. You could then agree a mid market rate that benefited both parties.Obviously this would depend on your circumstances. I work in a place with 200 people so it would often work with me.1

Sorry about the late reply.
I had seen adverts for the cash "buyback" but wrongly assumed that as it was called buyback, they would only buy back currency that you obtained from them in the first place.
I did ask around with friends and workmates to see if anyone was planning on travelling to the US in the near future but with the current airport and airline problems, no one is planning a trip at the moment.0 -
If you are near London, one of the independents like Ace FX or Thomas Exchange usually have good rates. They both offer a postal service too for buying back currency.0
