Prepayment meter - am I entitled to go on quarterly?
Hi,
Having seen the latest news I logged into my British Gas account and they’re telling me I must stay on what I have. I am on a prepayment meter but wanted to go on a fixed tariff via DD. Given all the news, am I resigned to PAYG? This doesn’t seem fair at all.
Thanks

Are you in any debt on the meter?
If not raise a complaint, actually talk to someone in British Gas

No debt, just went on my tariff page then and it said we can’t offer you anything you must stay as you are. Do not ring us 😀Mstty said:Are you in any debt on the meter?

Thank you for the info! I will follow up.0 -
You should be able to change unless you defaulted payments/in debt etc and then rightly so you should be on the pre-payment meter. Sorry as this sounds harsh but why should people that pay their bills pay for others. If you have not defaulted etc, etc, complain.
Good luck.0 -
I’ve never been on DD and not in debt. Just in the queue to speak with BG now.diystarter7 said:You should be able to change unless you defaulted payments/in debt etc and then rightly so you should be on the pre-payment meter. "Energy prices are currently so high that we aren't able to offer you a better deal at the moment – so it's best to stay on your current tariff or with your existing energy supplier for now."
Um prepayment meter is the most expensive
Just to add: No debt either, meter was here when I moved in 15 years ago.0 -
At the moment many suppliers have this as standard info on their web site.
It seems many consumers are slowly waking up after having been hammered for months that there are sky rocketing energy prices and now trying to get fixed tariffs that don't exist any longer.0 -

Actually that isn't true, the most expensive way to pay is usually a standard credit account where you pay cash or cheque on receipt of the bill. With the capped standard variable tariff, paying by prepayment meter is only about £10 more expensive over the course of a year, than paying by DD for typical consumption levels.Plenty of reasons to want to get off of a prepay meter, but cost isn't really one of them at the moment. It was different when there were crazy cheap fixed deals out there, but that isn't the case at the moment sadly.0 -
How did you get on, OP?
Thanks.0
