how to stop pop ups

how do i stop pop ups on my computer?i am yrying to remember how i did it on my pc, to tell my sister, i know its really simple what i did , i just unticked a box somewhere on my computer.
anyone know?

Its it a Windows XP machine running Internet Explorer??

Is it fully patched up??

I have the Internet explorer pop up blocker on my machine that is accessed from Tools menu.

There could be other ad-ware on the machine causing the popups.

Do you run checks using adaware often?? or spybot search and destroy?

These are highly recommended software tools for checking your computer and keeping the spyware/adware files at bay. Both are free.

Click on tools, internet options, privacy tab the box is near the bottom. It appears with service pack 2 installed.

Apart from running a fully patched up system - Microsoft is due to release further updates tues 14th June 2005- You could try installing Firefox as your browser more secure - Tools, options, web features, top tick box.

I don't believe its a matter of unchecking an option. Maybe wrong. But the google toobar does provide a function for stopping popups.
