Damaged a garage fuel pump

And what makes you think that towing a club boat is a commercial activity? I know exactly the type of set up that the OP is describing, and it's entirely fair and legit. I belong to a dive club that does exactly the same thing.Admiral_Barbarossa said:

We (the club) are pretty sure there is no commercial activity involved!
The driver is a member and was using the boat as well so it's not like he was just doing the towing.
He paid for all of the fuel himself using his own debit card and has the receipt for this.
Those of us with suitable vehicles take turns to tow and pay for our own fuel / running costs.
The members that do not have suitable tow cars bring the food, pay for the harbour fees, bring the fuel for the boat, etc etc.
It's all pretty informal. At worst, somebody's car might be out of action and they might ask another member to tow twice and they might pay that members fuel for them but that would be the same thing, ie, they would pay directly for the fuel when filled rather than pass the money to the driver.

I'm not so sure, if you're towing for leisure then you're probably towing expensive equipment that might not belong to you. Bikes, boats, caravans, etc.Grey_Critic said:S.D & P whilst towing a lot of expensive equipment that is the property of a third party is not an everyday occurrence.
Anyway, the OP doesn't seem to be claiming for any damage to the trailer or components, so what was on it is pretty much irrelevant. They were on a leisure trip without being paid, it's clearly Social, Domestic and Pleasure.

I'm wondering if the huge claim for loss of profits is something to do with this. If that was the only pump suitable for HGV, then they may have lost a lot of business with the pump out of action. Lorries fill in hundreds of litres, not the 20-40 litres of the average motorist. That may have been the most profitable pump of the lot. I'm not saying the £44k is justified, just that it may not be as simple as it appears.se2020 said:We stopped at a fuel station and, due to the length of car+trailer used the hgv pump to put some diesel in his car.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
But OP said there were other HGV pumps available.Richard53 said:

First reference in the OP was to "the HGV pump". It read as if there was only one HGV-specific pump, and the length of the vehicle train meant they had no choice but to use it, as if to explain the later consequences. OP later mentioned other HGV pumps, but given the first statement I wasn't sure if he/she meant just diesel pumps. Perhaps OP could clarify. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0
