Confusing Bill

Morning,

I have recently moved out of a rental property. I changed supplier last year to be with Octopus Energy as I'd used them previously and found their customer service was excellent and they seemed competitive on prices. I provided meter reading for both gas and electricity when requested and my bills were based on this usage, no problem. I had a direct debit so the money was always automatically obtained. Prior to moving out I phoned and informed them I was moving house and agreed final amount to be paid, this was at the end of May. This week I received an email from them stating -

It looks as though there was a period (from 20th November 2021 to 1st April 2022), where we didn't charge you for the energy you used. We've now added these charges to your bill, so your account is completely up to date. This equates to an additional £215.

This seems very unfair and tbh I don't understand how this could have happened. If anyone can provide any further insight or advice about what to do I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

James

So what bills did you receive ? based on what meter readings?
I wouldn't say it's unfair to be expected to pay for something you've used, as long as they have not charged you for it in the past and apply the correct tariff to it. You might get a goodwill gesture of £20 or so for the inconvenience though.
  • Hi,
do you have original bills/statements that cover that period?

Suppliers are required by the terms of their Supply Licence to produce a Final Bill within 6 weeks. The Supply Licence then goes on to say that a revised bill should be raised as soon as an error/discrepancy is detected. Revised bills are also subject to Back Billing rules but it is safe to say that this does not apply in your case. At best, you can expect an apology and a small amount of compensation.
