We have a small yellow notice on our door that a lovely police officer gave me a few years ago. It says 'We do not buy at the door. If you do not have an appointment, please do not bother knocking' and there's a police logo on it too, just to emphasise the point.

So a couple of weeks ago a Virgin broadband representative knocked on the door, "excuse me . .  "  "Oh sorry, sez I (why should I be sorry?!) but we don't buy at the door" pointed to the sticker and shut the door.  Then I felt I'd been rude but hello? He knocked on my door in a very unsolicited way. And I did apologise, in the British way.

Anyone wants to chop my trees down they can whistle. But then again, I only have three very small ones and I quite like them.

But seriously, I'd want to get someone proper in to do a proper job. If I ever DID commission somebody at the door then I'd pay up. 'Mea culpa', as my local councillor was fond of saying. He wasn't very good at being a counsellor! Maybe cash though.

Other than my children when they were little, no one, no one can ever pester me into doing anything.

Re cold callers, roof repairs/drives/windows I say no thanks meaning    ... off.
But I'm guessing you're the right side of 60 and never taught 7 year olds?

What's the 'right' side', exactly? I'd really love to know so then I can see if I am on it. And who hasn't ever taught 7 year olds? I know I have! But I need to know which side I'm on.

No offence but "pestering you"  and "cold callers," good/decent or crooks you need to seek help from family/friends/advocates that no cold caller ever "pesters" you into anything.

If you pay via cash, insist on a receipt there and then, no ifs, no buts.

I had someone pestering me re driv at our previous address - I came home for lunch from work these people were doing some sort of repair to next doors path/concrete and of all things he asked if he could borrow a brush - i was staggered then the idiot wanted to quote me for my front garden to drive, i said no three times and then I had to say to him, "which part of no do you not understand."

Other than my children when they were little, no one, no one can ever pester me into doing anything.

NB: Cold caller, no thank you, no thank you, goodbye and shut the door.

They are not tree surgeons, they are people with a chain saw.  Few reputable businesses cold call for work these days and none pressurize and pester people or give false details.

However, they have done the work, you agreed the price so it's a bit late to be worrying about things now. Bank transfer is the same as cash, once it leaves your account it's gone. They can't however take any more money from your account if that is what you are fearful of.

What you do need to be mindful of is now you have been pressured into agreeing to work you may start receiving more cold calls for other types of work, such as replacing a slipped tile on the roof or needing a new driveway etc.

Only you can say no and close the door, we can't do that for you unfortunately.
