I am currently on online chat with TT and they are now telling me the 4k box is compatible if I get a USB - I could scream - which is it!!!???
"USB" doesn't make a great deal of sense.

I decided to google freeview play and recorder to see what options were there - no it wasn't TT - my broadband is not good I live in a rural area - I currently get my tv and on demand through their old box that is only just working (well the recording part is iffy but the normal viewing is ok)
If you get a decent signal via your TV aerial (I presume you have one) then anything you watch or record takes place through that and outside of TT. You only need a broadband connection to watch programmes that you haven't previously recorded. This is done via BBC iplayer, ITV Hub, etc.

Modern pvr boxes include all this functionality and should work with a half decent broadband connection. As has been mentioned above, it's only TT who are pushing you to their fancy 4k option which your tv won't benefit from.

In addition to the Manhattan box I mentioned in a previous post Humax have their online site which includes refurbished models.

I don't really understand what is meant by you needing a USB! Can you clarify the reason for this being a requirement because it doesn't make sense to me unless it is to do with the broadband connection to your property.

What make and model of tv do you have? The connections on it are quite important given that you say it's not a smart tv. My old tv wasn't smart either but it had connections on back which enabled me to connect most devices.

I think TT are trying to push you into a more expensive deal that you don't really need (that's what the sales team are trained to do). Don't be rushed into this.

Yes have TV aerial but I don't get any channels unless youview box is plugged in, only watch iplayer etc infrequently, currently record what I want to watch to watch it later.  TT said I could get their 4k box but need a USB so I can record programmes.
My tv is a panasonic not sure of model had for about 15 years.
Broadband speed is poor 2mbps - looked up smart tv's and they say you need approx 7mbps

TT said 4k box won't record without a USB stick

    Now I understand.

I've just looked at the specs for the box and basically it's a streamer device and doesn't contain a hard drive to record programmes onto.

If you want to record anything for future viewing then it requires a USB memory stick for storage purposes but TT don't include this in the deal.

"My tv is a panasonic not sure of model had for about 15 years."!

Probably time to get a new one that is likely to use far less energy and potentially could offer direct to USB recording although with so much available on catch-up possibly not really necessary

With built in freeview play so a seven day catch up service and a shiny new tv to boot (with a five year warranty)
