Travel insurance for a wedding in USA

Travel insurance can give cancellation cover for “death, serious injury or illness of any insured person, your travelling companion or a close relative” or “sudden death, serious illness or accidental injury”. I want to check whether, especially under the latter policy wording (ie illness which is not serious), cover would be provided in the following situation, assuming the policy covers Covid.

Six of us travelling to USA: myself, my wife, our two adult children, their partners. The trip is for the wedding of daughter and her fiancé and it’s maybe worth mentioning we will be the only six people attending.

o   If daughter or fiancé catch Covid, would we all be covered for the cancellation of the trip – flights and any non-refundable accommodation? Is it relevant that fiancé is not yet a close relative? And what does “your” travelling companion mean – anyone in your party?

o   If myself or my wife, or our son or his partner, catch Covid, the wedding would go ahead but, depending on who gets ill, that person and maybe their OH would not travel. We might also shorten the trip involving changing flights. Where are we likely to stand on this please?

(I will try to get written confirmation in advance from the companies that they would cover, but views here would be helpful.)

Is this actually a package holiday booked through an agent ? Or have you booked flights and accommodation separately?

Is it one package holiday booking for all in the party ? Or have people made their own  bookings ?
Party would likely be defined as everyone on the same booking with one lead passenger.

Not through at agent. The three couples are on separate flight bookings as all are on slightly different routes (honeymoon for the couple; son will be living in Italy) though I made and paid for them all.

I would think that your travelling companion will apply to only the other person on your booking .

Are you purchasing travel insurance for everyone in the party on one policy - that would seem to be the only way to ensure cover - but you would have to check the wording of the specific policy that you choose and if the cover applies as you are all travelling on different routes .

I'm assuming you haven't already got travel insurance in place which is a very bad move, but that's another matter.  I would try to find a local insurance broker and work with them.  What you are seeking will almost certainly not be standard cover as the bride and groom are not travelling with you, and others are also travelling from different start points.

UK travel insurance usually states it is  for those resident in UK so son living in Italy would have to arrange this own ravel insurance there.

We all have travel insurance in place: the two UK couples as part of Nationwide current accounts, those in Italy through policies taken out there. I may have a word with a broker – thanks.

As a first step have you spoken to the insurers who provide the policy through the bank?  The 'close relative' serious illness may give cover but will need to be confirmed.  If the bride or groom had to isolate due to Covid I would think it difficult for the insurer to argue that the illness is not serious.
