Check with the Pension Tracing Service https://www.gov.uk/find-pension-contact-details using as much information as you have.

Has the question arisen because you have obtained a State Pension Forecast showing a COPE?
A SAR may very well give the information you need.

Did you ever work in the public sector?0

If you belonged to an employer's pension scheme, then you will have been contracted out through that and don't need to take any action.
Alternatively, do you have some vague recollection of taking out a personal pension purely for the purposes of contracting out, probably in the late 1990s or thereabouts?Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0 -

It is possible that the OP has a deferred pension in a COSR scheme which he needs to claim?
Even if he has not reached NRA, he should at least be aware that he should reconnect with the scheme, particularly if he has changed address.
Action of some sort would appear to be advisable.
It is equally possible that there is a personal pension policy taken out post 1988 that he has forgotten ever opening.
If so, action is required in that he should check his paperwork etc?
