There are several situations where cash can't be used already.TELLIT01 said:There are many archaic laws still on the statute book, that doesn't mean to say they are enforced or that they can't be repealed. Very obviously the one referred to by the OP, if it ever existed is no longer enforced. I would hate to have a situation where cash couldn't be used. It's far too easy to lose or damage a payment card and then you are well and truly stuck.
I was in Caffe Nero, they didn't take cash.
A parking payment machine I used recently only took cards.
Honest Burgers only took cards.
There have been several other bars & restaurants I've been in that were card only recently, both before and after the pandemic restrictions.0 -
It amuses me that it's up on legislation.gov.uk. With all bar 3 sections repealedAylesbury_Duck said:

On the other hand there are several local establishments I visit on a semi-regular basis that only take cash and show no sign of embracing the debit/credit card age.2

One of my local Chinese takeaways has only recently started accepting card payments. The others (that I sometimes use) are still cash-only.TadleyBaggie said:On the other hand there are several local establishments I visit on a semi-regular basis that only take cash and show no sign of embracing the debit/credit card age.Jenni x0 -

The only place I regularly need cash for is the barbers (assuming I go to the local one, the one in London is card only).0 -

According to the Bank of England no such requirement exists. From What is legal tender? | Bank of England
"A shop owner can choose what payment they accept. If you want to pay for a pack of gum with a £50 note, it’s perfectly legal to turn you down. Likewise for all other banknotes, it’s a matter of discretion. If your local corner shop decided to only accept payments in Pokémon cards that would be within their right too. But they’d probably lose customers."

One of the large Garden Centres near me is still card only. Easier for them I suppose, with the cost of card transactions to them being outweighed by not having to lug large amounts of cash to the bank. Our local Chinese continued only to take cash throughout the pandemic. Parking machines in Cheltenham have changed to card/app payment only in the past few weeks.
