    It will vary obviously depending on many factors but annuityadvantage.com suggest an extra 1.75 years for a male and 1 year for a female when starting from 31 as opposed to from birth. These are American figures but I don’t imagine they would be too different in the UK.

    I'd have a good look at the provisions for ill health early retirement before making any decisions. There can be a significant amount of time between being I'll enough to draw your pension and no longer being around.

    (I'm 40 and 2 years into ill health early retirement, under rubbish circumstances obviously but so glad this was an option)
