Unexpected Amazon Promotion

I am an occasional buyer on Amazon UK. Today I decided to buy an mp3 album, Butter Miracle Suite One by Counting Crows, for £3.99. A promotion offer of £3.98 appeared giving a total of £0.01.
When I placed the order the invoice showed £3.98 less £3.98 promotion so I was charged nothing.
I'm
not complaining, I'm just curious as to why I have been given this
unexpected promotion.
Are
Amazon Digital hoping I will buy more mp3 albums or is there some other explanation?

My DS told me about this happening as well, apparently if you add something to your wish list and leave it there you occasionally get an offer through. For us it only works with e books , but I often get £4 off a £6 book for the kindle, by often I mean about every 6 weeks or so. It's usually done by author, so it isn't necessarily limited to a single book but we get a message along the lines of 'you've added the author xx to your wish list and we can now offer you 60% off any current ebook by that author.

I rarely buy mp3 downloads (I think this is my first ever mp3 purchase) as I prefer to buy CDs but Butter Miracle Suite One is a four track EP that was only released on Vinyl or as a download. I no longer have a record player for vinyl so it was mp3 or nothing.
