First time buyer of property and utilities

    Having said this, when I moved in last August, I was able to register with Bulb without having to speak to anyone at all.

    Bulb does not offer fixed tariffs, so there is no problem registering online with them.
    It is the others who make it difficult/impossible to register online and stay on the standard variable tariff...

    I've no idea about how easy it is to set up an account online with BG or how easy to select a tariff of your choice without resorting to a phone call.  Good luck with your move.  the only issue with my move last August was the demise of Avro at my old address before I was due the credit balance on the account.  Got it eventually via Octopus (the appointed SOLR).

    No idea on what it is like for others as I've only moved house once in 25 years (and that was enough) :s

    Bulb were actually quite efficient in the brief time I was with them and I never needed to speak to anyone which was a bonus.
