HSBC charges, has this happened to anyone else?

My OH closed a business account with HSBC about 8-9 months ago. When he closed it, he was told by the advisor that he was about 50p in credit.Since then, he has received no statements (as you'd expect). This morning, he recieved a letter from a debt collector on behalf of HSBC for £50 outstanding on this account. At the time he closed the account, he was in credit and wasn't told of any charges he owed. He's going to see HSBC on monday and wants to know if this will affect his credit record? Will HSBC be responsible for correcting this? Thanks
