Virgin Mobile - first bill arrived before the SIM card

I used the offer promoted here and moved to Virgin Mobile, I signed up yesterday. Today, I already received an email with my first bill. Not payable until mid-month and an amount that I won't really notice going out of the account (6GBP) but - is it normal that I have the first bill before I even have the SIM card?
(maybe it is, I'd been with my previous provider for years and I don't remember how that started in terms of charges, but I was slightly irritated when I got the email)

It's not unusual to pay regular rental amount month in advance.2

Thanks, yes that was one of the potential reasons I could think of. I guess I just expected to run up some usage first, before getting a bill (which could potentially be higher than the standard monthly charge of six pounds).0
