Their FAQ has a question "What is a Variable DD?" and the answer seems to suggest they offer this as an option.

Well, after a lengthy spell of hold music I spoke to someone in some part of the world somewhere who told me that I will be switched to payment per bill.  So good news there, Eon almost lost a customer by going to such great lengths to hide this option.  Presumably they prefer to keep quiet, otherwise more might switch to it who would otherwise keep paying made-up amounts every month.

My current £200 credit will just be deducted from the next bill(s), so I probably won't pay anything for a couple of months.

Super, thanks for all the help.  This was much less hassle than changing, I don't think there would be any point in changing now as there's almost nothing to choose between them otherwise.
