Clocked mileage query

We bought a car on 29/06/2020 (during the pandemic) from an on line dealer around 100 miles from where we live. The car was delivered for 'free' and the driver left the paperwork, receipt, V5 and service book which was stamped by them showing us they had serviced the car at 14388 miles. The car was 15 months old at the time and everything seemed fine and the car has been OK. When it came to the 1st MOT the car had still only done 19836 miles  as we do very little mileage. I decided to have it fully serviced at our local garage 3 months later by which point the mileage was just short of 21000 miles. NOW IS THE PECULIAR THING !!!! On picking the car up after the service I noticed the odometer reading showing 33929 miles !!!!! On querying this the manager was as surprised as me in that he thought this strange too. He said that he'd never had this before and put it down to 'something wrong with the electrics ? '. (possibly CPU  I thought ) I did comment to him whether he thought the car could have been 'clocked' at some point but he dismissed this and couldn't understand the 13000 mile increase. So my question is has this happened to anyone else on this forum? Any replies/ input would be most welcome as I still feel that I may have been sold a clocked car !!!!!

    I suspect that during the service someone has accidentally changed the vehicle computer settings to read as kilometres instead of miles ...

    33929km = 21082 miles
    That sounds very logical
    Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • Thanks for these replies these comments make total sense and I shall be revisiting the garage where I had it serviced !!!!

    May be something you can easily change yourself in the display options settings (depending on make/model) ....check your handbook

    ^^^^^^^^  This.  We had a similar problem some years ago.  Simple to chack and to change.
  • And as already asked,make and model?
    Somebody on here might be able to confirm if it's possible, by the owner, to revert to miles, if indeed it is reading kilometres.
  • UPDATE !!! Spot on TonyMMM !! Went straight to the car and went in to settings and lo and behold language had reset to French and odometer to Km. Quick change back to English and everything back to normal !! Thanks to others that posted replies, this has stopped me worrying about the car being clocked OH JOY !!!
