BA Compensation for cancelled flight

I had booked to fly to Majorca (PMI) with BA for a friends stag do. My original flight was booked back in Sept 21, and the flight was supposed to depart on 16th June 2022 from LHR. This flight was cancelled on 14th June 2022, and I managed to rebook onto another BA flight from LGW to PMI (also departing on the 16th June). However, on the 14th June at 9.51pm I got an email from BA informing me that the LGW flight had been cancelled.... As that cancellation was made approx 40 hours before the planned departure time, and in my opinion the cancellation was the airlines fault (the airlines schedule was too much for the airport to cope with), would I be entitled to any compensation? I did briefly read up on it, but it didn't seem very clear in this situation.

FYI: I did manage to book onto a W!zz air flight from LTN to PMI at the last minute, but the fare was a lot higher than the original amount I paid to BA (£260 compared with £140). Hence why I considered the viability of compensation as I am genuinely out of pocket due to no fault of my own.

Have you already accepted a refund from BA ?

When BA cancelled you were entitled to choose between asking  them to re - route you ( pay for another flight to get you to your destination) OR a refund .

If you have accepted a refund rather than re-routing  you may still be entitled to a set amount of compensation but it depends on the reason given for the cancellation of the flight .

If you have not yet asked for the refund - then you can try to claim for the re-routing -( Wizzair ticket ) retrospectively-

You are not entitled to both REFUND & RE-ROUTING
  • BA offered to re route me on a flight that would land at 22.30 on June 17th 2022, about 32hrs after the original flight should have landed. I was flying back early morning on the 20th.... So I chose the refund flights option as there were no other suitable BA flights.

You could have asked BA to book you on the WizzAir flight instead of requesting  a refund .

In addition to the refund you have received you may still claim the set amount of compensation - depending on the reason BA cancelled the flight .
